This someone was Marie “Mimi” Haist, a homeless woman he met in the most unlikely place. Little did they know that their friendship would become something truly special.

Meeting Mimi: A Life-Changing Encounter

In 1994, fate brought the actor and Mimi together. At the time, Mimi was volunteering at a laundromat, relying on tips from customers to survive. The actor frequented the laundromat simply because he lived nearby, and thus, their paths crossed.

Over time, their bond grew stronger, and the actor discovered that Mimi was actually living at the laundromat. Determined to make a difference in her life, he found her an apartment and covered all the expenses. He also introduced her to actress Renée Zellweger, who helped furnish the apartment.

Mimi may not have known who the actor was, but she recognized Renée and was thrilled to meet her. With a place of her own and newfound support, Mimi expressed her gratitude, saying, “I now have a place to live and my own bed. It helps me pay for food and my phone bill.”

The Red Carpet Treatment: Unforgettable Experiences

As the actor, Zach Galifianakis, skyrocketed to fame with his breakthrough role in “The Hangover” in 2009, his friendship with Mimi continued to flourish. She became his go-to date for film premieres and other Hollywood events.

Though such glamorous gatherings were new to both of them, Mimi embraced them with grace. She enjoyed getting dressed up and having her makeup done, riding in a limo, and experiencing a world she never thought she’d be a part of.

While Mimi cherished these unforgettable moments, Galifianakis himself admitted that he disliked red carpet events. However, having Mimi by his side made it all worthwhile, as he stated, “I like to see her in that atmosphere. Somehow she fits in in a very strange way.”

A Star in Her Own Right

Mimi’s presence by Galifianakis’ side not only brought her joy but also caught the attention of others. In 2016, a documentary called “Queen Mimi” was made about her extraordinary life. The film director, Yaniv Rokah, was captivated by Mimi’s story and wanted to share it with the world.

Since the release of the documentary, Mimi became recognized by customers at the laundromat. They saw her as a star, but for Mimi, life continued as usual. She didn’t let fame change her or her dedication to her job of cleaning the dryers at the laundromat.

Despite the challenges she faced throughout her life, Mimi never considered herself homeless. She avoided falling in with the wrong crowd and refused to be consumed by depression. Her friends would often tell her she was famous, but Mimi just saw herself as someone living her life.

Unfortunately, Mimi passed away in late 2021, but her memory lives on through her documentary and the impact she had on the lives of those around her. Both Galifianakis and Zellweger will forever be grateful for their friendship with this remarkable woman.
