Richard Field, an actor-turned-army officer, and Margaret Field, a former model, welcomed Sally Field into the world on November 6, 1946 in Pasadena, California. Her mother married the actor and stuntman Jock Mahoney in 1950, the year her parents divorced.

She has a sister, Sharon. Her parents divorced when she was two, and Field withdrew into herself. “I became very self-reliant at a young age”, she later remarked.
