Fans around the world are sending well wishes to Bonnie Tyler after the legendary vocalist underwent emergency surgery while staying in Portugal.
The 74-year-old singer, best known for her iconic hit “Total Eclipse of the Heart,” was hospitalized in Faro, located in Portugal’s Algarve region, where she owns a home. News of the medical emergency was confirmed through a statement shared on her official website.

According to the statement, Tyler required urgent intestinal surgery while in Portugal. Fortunately, the procedure was reportedly successful, and the singer is now recovering.
“We are very sorry to announce that Bonnie has been admitted to hospital in Faro, Portugal, where she has a home, for emergency intestinal surgery,” the statement read.
“The surgery went well and she is now recuperating. We know that all of her family, friends, and fans will be concerned about this news and will be wishing her well for a full and swift recovery.”
The update immediately sparked an outpouring of support online from longtime fans who have followed Tyler’s decades-long music career.
Born Gaynor Sullivan in Skewen, Wales, Tyler became one of the most recognizable voices in rock and pop music thanks to her raspy vocals and emotionally charged performances. Over the course of five decades, she has released more than 15 albums and built a devoted global fan base.
Even now, Tyler continues to tour extensively and remains deeply connected to performing live music.
“I’ve been so very lucky in my life to work with some of the best producers and songwriters in the world,” she previously said. “Just finished a massive tour of Brazil and South America, I do so much work across the world.”

Despite the years, she has repeatedly insisted she has no interest in slowing down.
Though Tyler has an extensive catalog, “Total Eclipse of the Heart” remains her defining anthem—and she’s more than happy to keep singing it.
“Lots of people ask me aren’t you fed up of singing it, but there is no way, I love it and everybody does, it is a karaoke classic,” she said after receiving an MBE in 2023.
That honor marked one of the proudest moments of her life. Tyler admitted she never expected to receive such recognition.
“I never ever thought I would have something like this, my mother and father would be so proud,” she shared. “To be nominated for a Grammy was wonderful, but to be given an MBE for something I absolutely love doing is a highlight of my career.”
Tyler has also maintained ties to charitable causes, including her longtime involvement with the Prince’s Trust. During her MBE ceremony, she recalled a memorable interaction with Prince William.
“When I did a concert in Cardiff for the Queen’s Jubilee, the Prince of Wales came down with Catherine and the children and he said he’d played them some of my music on the way down so that they would know who they were meeting,” she said.
She added that William greeted her warmly during the ceremony, saying, “What I loved about it is Prince William just had this big smile.”
While Tyler’s sudden hospitalization came as a shock, the positive update following surgery has reassured many fans. For now, the music icon appears focused on resting and recovering before eventually returning to the stage she’s loved for decades.
Given her enduring passion for performing, many supporters are hopeful this latest health scare will only be a temporary pause in an extraordinary career.
