To gain insight into the issue, we reached out to Toccoa Riverside Restaurant’s owner, Tim Richter. He refuted the claims of fines, stating that while they did implement a surcharge during the COVID-19 pandemic to cover extra costs, no customer was ever fined for their children’s behavior. Richter did recall an incident involving a family with nine particularly rowdy children, but the restaurant chose to issue them a warning, not a fine.
“Our aim is not to punish parents but to encourage them to take responsibility for their children’s behavior,” Richter clarified.
Mixed Reactions from the Public
Opinions on the “parenting fine” policy have been divided among customers. Laura Spillman couldn’t believe it, exclaiming, “That is crazy! Kids are cute; you shouldn’t charge for that.” Meanwhile, Anne Cox believed that a potential fee could serve as a gentle reminder to parents about their responsibilities. “Parents need to teach kids etiquette and consider others around them,” Cox asserted.
Federico Gambineri, dining at the restaurant with his toddler, expressed his concern about the policy. “If I were charged, I would be unhappy and probably not recommend the place,” he admitted. On the other hand, Jack Schneider had a more nuanced perspective: “We’ve all been next to tables where we think, ‘Do something about that kid.’ But ultimately, it’s the parents’ responsibility.”
