But did you know that this Hollywood actor once took on the role of a firefighter? On September 11, 2001, Buscemi, now 65 years old, returned to his old job as a New York City firefighter to help search for survivors in the aftermath of the World Trade Center attack.

Before pursuing a career in acting, Buscemi had trained as a firefighter. In fact, he had even worked as a FDNY firefighter in downtown Manhattan in the 1980s. Undeterred, he headed to the site and found his former engine company. “I asked if I could join them,” he recalled. “I could tell they were a little suspicious at first, but I worked with them that day.”

He reflects on suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and admits that anniversaries and discussing that time can still trigger strong emotions within him. Despite the emotional toll, Buscemi’s selfless act of courage did not go unnoticed. In 2013, a Facebook post by the Brotherhood of Fire reminded people of his contribution: “Do you recognise this man? Do you know his name? Lots of people know he’s an actor, and that his name is Steve Buscemi. What very few people realise is that he was once one of New York’s Bravest.”

In addition to his heroic actions, Buscemi has also been an advocate for firefighters’ welfare. He emphasizes the need for firefighters to recognize that they, too, may need support. Buscemi serves on the Board of Advisors for Friends of Firefighters, an organization dedicated to providing assistance to New York firefighters and their relatives. Alongside fellow actors such as Kevin Smith and Gary Sinise, he continues to champion the cause.
