Seek Ye First: A Journey Through Matthew 6:33

Howdy, friends. Now, this might surprise you, but today I want to talk about something that many folks might not want to hear. You see, what if I told you that the key to a successful, fulfilling life isn’t in your bank account, job title, or social status? Now don’t close your browser just yet – stick with me, because what I’m about to tell you could just change your life. Let’s dive into the beautiful depths of Matthew 6:33.

“But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well.”

Now, I know many of y’all might be thinking, “John, we already know that verse. It’s been preached from every pulpit and etched on every Bible cover.” But bear with me. Let’s dig a little deeper than the surface to find out what this means and how it applies to our daily lives.

The Kingdom and His Righteousness

When Matthew talks about seeking His kingdom, he isn’t talking about some far-off place in the sky. Nope, he’s talking about God’s active reign here and now. Seeking His kingdom means aligning our priorities with His, putting His will above our own. It’s about adopting a heavenly mindset even when we’re right here on good ol’ American soil.

Now, righteousness – that’s a word we hear thrown around a lot too. But it’s not about being perfect or holier-than-thou. Righteousness is about being in right standing with God. It’s about pursuing what He considers just, loving what He loves, and hating what He hates. It’s about embodying His character in everything we do.

As a true servant of God, I can tell you, seeking His kingdom and righteousness is a path of faith, trust, and obedience. And trust me, at 60 years young, I’ve learned that it’s not always easy. But it is always worth it.

The Promise of Provision

Now here’s the kicker: “…and all these things will be given to you as well.” Whatsoever things you need – not necessarily what you want, but what you need – will be given to you. A roof over your head, food on your table, health in your body – the Lord promises to take care of us if we make Him our priority. And ain’t that refreshing in an age where so many are chasing after worldly possessions and empty success?

I remember back in the day as a young whippersnapper, I chased after the American Dream with all the vigor of a hound dog on a scent trail. But it wasn’t until I turned my eyes toward the Lord that I found true contentment. Now, I ain’t saying I’m rolling in dough, but my needs have always been met, often in miraculous ways only a true believer can understand.

The Countercultural Commitment

Friends, this call to seek first His kingdom is countercultural, especially in today’s world. The media, the neighbors, even some family members might think you’re plumb crazy for making faith your top priority. They might think you’re misguided for reading the Bible instead of the latest best-selling self-help book.

But here’s a little bit of wisdom from my years on this earth: There’s nothing more freeing than being in the center of God’s will. People and trends come and go, but His kingdom stands eternal. When we seek Him first, we anchor ourselves to something everlasting. We’re not swayed by every little wind of change. We’re solid, steadfast, and secure in our purpose and provision.

Our Journey Together

Have you ever considered what it might look like to really seek His kingdom first in your life? To truly trust in His righteousness? If you haven’t, let’s start that journey together right now. Today is as good a day as any to realign our hearts and lives with His glorious kingdom work.

Maybe it means starting your day with prayer and Scripture instead of the morning news. Maybe it’s prioritizing time with your family and sharing the Word over pursuits that draw you away from Him. Perhaps it’s about getting involved in your local church or supporting missionaries who are working hard to expand His kingdom.

For me, I’ve found that my own humble mornings, sitting on my front porch with a hot cup of coffee and the Good Book, set the tone for a day lived in His presence. My grandkids call it quaint. I call it the best part of my day. God has a way of showing up when we make room for Him, friends. I dare you to give it a try and just see if those promises of provision aren’t fulfilled right before your eyes.

Closing in Prayer

As we wrap up, let’s bow our heads together in prayer:

Heavenly Father, we come before You with open hearts. We dedicate this day to seeking Your kingdom and righteousness above all else. Help us to trust Your promises, knowing that when we prioritize You, everything else will fall into place. Guide our steps, align our hearts with Yours, and provide for our needs as only You can. In Jesus’ mighty name, we pray. Amen.

May you walk in His blessings today and always, seeking first His kingdom, and witnessing the wondrous ways He provides. God bless you, and God bless America!
