Riona Finds Hope and a New Home After a Year of Recovery from Cruelty

It’s hard to fathom how some people can be so heartless towards animals. Riona, a lovable pup, endured unimaginable cruelty when her owner set her on fire last year. However, after enduring a year of recovery, Riona is finally on her way to a new home filled with love.

Last year in June, the residents of Nutbush, Tennessee, witnessed a heart-wrenching scene. Riona, a pitbull mix, was seen running down the street covered in flames. The unmistakable smell of gasoline revealed the horrifying truth – she was intentionally set on fire.

“All you could smell was gas,” shared Mallory Mclemore of Bluff City Veterinary Specialists. Ginger Natoli, founder of Tails of Hope Dog Rescue, said, “She was burnt and covered in diesel fuel, proving she was set on fire through witness statements.” In addition, neighbor’s security footage showed Riona running engulfed in flames.

Although Riona tragically lost an ear, her left eye was miraculously saved thanks to immediate medical attention. In the care of Tails of Hope Dog Rescue, she received critical treatments at Bluff City Veterinary Specialists, including twice-daily full body wraps to help her healing skin.

Riona’s story touched many hearts on TikTok, where a video documenting her journey garnered millions of views worldwide. The support and compassion for Riona were overwhelming as she embarked on a challenging path to recovery.

Riona’s recovery included multiple skin grafts to treat the severe burns covering her body. Despite the trauma, Riona remained cheerful throughout her recovery. “She’s always wagging her tail,” Mclemore said, highlighting her sweet nature despite having suffered so much cruelty. “She’s cute with one ear,” Natoli commented, noting how her appearance complemented her adorable personality.

Throughout her rehabilitation, Tails of Hope shared regular updates on Riona’s progress, receiving generous donations and thoughtful gifts. Meanwhile, Quishon Brown, aged 43, was arrested for the horrific act. Charged with misdemeanor assault and felonies for cruelty to animals and arson, his case is pending trial.

Riona’s ordeal also inspired legislative action. According to a Facebook update, her story played a role in advancing a new animal cruelty bill in Tennessee.

As time passed, Riona’s health gradually improved. Now, a year after the tragic incident, she is about to begin an exciting new chapter. Tails of Hope shared that they were embarking on a ten-hour journey to bring Riona to her forever home.

“Our goal was her a forever home, and that’s precisely what we have found,” Natoli told the media. Riona’s new family offers companionship with other dogs, playful children, a spacious yard, and experienced care from a family knowledgeable about medical needs.

“Riona’s story is just beginning,” the rescue shared on Facebook, emphasizing that everyone who supported her became part of this “warrior” girl’s miracle journey.

While Riona’s newfound joy is celebrated, Tails of Hope reminded us of ongoing rescue efforts. After Riona left for her new home, they immediately welcomed another rescued burn victim. “There is always another in need,” they noted, eager to aid yet another story of recovery.

It’s heartbreaking to think of the suffering Riona endured, yet we rejoice knowing she is on her way to a loving new home!
