“Do you believe in love at first sight”? is a question often hotly debated and brought up in romance stories and rom-com films since who knows when.

But what do you think? And what does that even mean?

“Do you believe in love at first sight?” is not easy to answer, and not even our own parents will share the same thoughts. Not everyone is so lucky.

Love at first sight can happen, though very rare.

This is what happened to Marlo Thomas and Phil Donahue.

Actress Marlo Thomas and Phil Donahue have been married since 1980 and this year marks their 42nd year together.

The couple is truly proud of their marriage and rightly so, since it’s been the subject of a few interviews and news stories.

Marlo appeared on the show that Donahue hosted and that’s how they met.

While on the show, Marlo told Phil that she found him “loving” and “generous”.

Then she said “Whoever is the woman in your life is very lucky”. Now that’s a confident lady!

It was obvious that she was in love with him. It was a different time and praising someone in public that way wasn’t exactly common.

Those meetings on the show led to the two falling in love, and eventually getting married. A relationship of 4 decades and counting.

And now the couple are happy to share all that they’ve learned from 40+ years of being together.

And apparently, Marlo had no intentions of getting married back then. That’s what happens when you meet the right person who will somehow change your perspective on certain matters.

To think that this was no simple marriage from the start. Donahue had 5 children all from a previous marriage, with 4 of whom he had custody over.

That meant Thomas sort of married into a family. It’s a situation that would have made anyone nervous.

The couple’s one solid piece of advice was the trust and support of each other no matter what.

It sounds simple and many young couples may even scoff and say “we know”, but it’s really not that easy. It takes a lot of practice, and a whole lot of conscious effort.

“And in a marriage, you gotta know that person has your back. This is the safest place I can be, he is going to be my everything — my cushion of life.” – said Thomas

Marriage is a real challenge, and one that takes two to tango. Man and woman need to overcome that challenge together.
