This morning, fans of the “Today” Show were in for quite the shocker when co-host Savannah Guthrie was MIA. While the absence was briefly touched upon by co-host Hoda Kotb, it was Craig Melvin who stepped in for Guthrie. So, where on Earth was she?
Well, get ready for this: Guthrie was off gallivanting on a book tour for her latest piece, “Mostly What God Does: Reflections on Seeking and Finding His Love Everywhere.” Just a day prior, she was in Texas, hobnobbing with none other than former President George W. Bush and former First Lady Laura Bush. Not a bad start to a book tour, right?
But hold on, Guthrie’s gig went from glam to slam. Fans of the “Today” Show were less than thrilled about her book tour. What set off this wave of discontent, you ask? An interview that aired on Thursday, just before her book escapade. Guthrie sat down with singer and actress Kelly Rowland to chat about her upcoming Netflix flick “Mea Culpa.” Sounds innocent enough, right?
Wrong. During the interview, Guthrie couldn’t resist name-dropping Beyoncé, who, in case you’ve been living under a rock, is Rowland’s BFF and a fellow Destiny’s Child alum. Fans found it downright rude to drag Beyoncé into a chat that should have been all about Rowland. One irked fan vented on social media, “Very disrespectful to ask… [Rowland] about Beyoncé every freaking time she comes on your show.”
As if that wasn’t enough, Guthrie persistently probed for more deets about Queen Bey, leaving fans feeling like she was fishing for gossip rather than spotlighting Rowland’s career and flick.
Was Guthrie’s questioning out of line? Well, that’s still up for a heated debate. Nonetheless, it’s clear as a sunny morning that many devotees of the “Today” Show are none too pleased with how the interview played out. This whole brouhaha has spurred talks about what’s appropriate when interviewing celebrities and the necessity of respecting their personal zones.
Even though Guthrie’s absence from the show might have zero to do with the interview hullaballoo, it’s evident that her approach left a sour taste in the mouths of loyal viewers. As fans eagerly await her return, it’s anyone’s guess how the “Today” Show will navigate this controversy and make amends.
In the meantime, check out the full interview in the video above. Decide for yourself whether Guthrie overstepped or if it’s much ado about nothing.
