Finally found a laundry trick that gets rid of that musty towel smell for good.
You know the smell—the towel seems perfectly clean when it comes out of the dryer, but the moment it gets damp, that sour, musty odor returns. Washing it again may hide the problem temporarily, yet after the next shower, it smells as though it sat wet in the laundry basket for days.
The solution isn’t adding more detergent or covering the odor with heavily scented fabric softener. In fact, those habits can make the problem worse.
The trick that finally worked was surprisingly simple: wash the towels with the correct amount of detergent on the hottest setting their care labels allow, add an extra rinse, and dry them completely and immediately.
It sounds basic, but each step fixes one of the main reasons towels begin to smell.
Why “Clean” Towels Can Still Smell Musty
Towels are designed to absorb and hold water. That makes them useful in the bathroom—and an ideal place for odor-causing microorganisms when they remain damp too long.
The problem often begins with a towel being folded over a hook, left in a pile, or tossed into the hamper before it has dried. Without enough airflow, the thick fabric stays damp for hours.
Product buildup creates another problem.
Using too much detergent can leave residue trapped between the towel’s fibers, especially if the washing machine is overloaded or doesn’t rinse thoroughly. Liquid fabric softener can coat the fibers, making towels less absorbent and allowing oils and residue to accumulate.
Eventually, an ordinary wash cycle may not be enough to remove everything.
Step One: Stop Overloading the Machine
I used to pack as many towels as possible into one load. It seemed efficient, but the towels couldn’t move freely.
Towels become extremely heavy when wet. If the drum is overcrowded, water and detergent may not circulate properly, and the rinse cycle may not remove the loosened grime.
Wash a reasonably sized load and leave enough room for the towels to tumble. Consult your machine’s instructions, especially if you are washing large bath sheets or thick cotton towels.
Fewer towels per load may seem less economical, but rewashing a smelly load uses even more water and energy.
Step Two: Measure the Detergent
More detergent does not necessarily produce cleaner towels.
In hard or soft water, an incorrect amount can leave residue or create too many suds. High-efficiency machines are especially sensitive to overuse.
Follow the detergent label and washing-machine instructions, measuring according to the load size and soil level. If the towels are not visibly dirty, they may need less product than expected.
Avoid pouring detergent directly onto dry towels unless the product specifically instructs you to do so. Use the dispenser so it can dilute and distribute properly.
Step Three: Use the Warmest Safe Water
Check the towel’s care label before selecting the temperature.
Sturdy white cotton towels may tolerate a hotter wash, while colored, decorative, microfiber, or delicate towels may require warm or cool water. Heat can help with oily buildup and microorganisms, but it can also fade colors or damage certain fibers.
The right setting is the hottest temperature considered safe for that particular towel—not automatically the hottest option on the machine.
If someone in the household is ill or has specific medical needs, follow appropriate laundering guidance from a healthcare professional or public-health authority.
Step Four: Add an Extra Rinse
This was the small adjustment that made the most noticeable difference in my laundry.
An extra rinse helps flush away detergent, soil, and loosened residue that might otherwise remain deep in the fibers. It is particularly useful if the towels feel waxy, stiff, or slippery after washing.
Some machines offer a “deep rinse” or “extra water” setting. If yours does, try it for thick towels.
If towels still produce excessive suds during the final rinse, that may be a sign that too much detergent was used.
What About Vinegar and Baking Soda?
Many laundry tips recommend vinegar, baking soda, or both. These products may sometimes help with odors, but they should not be mixed together in the same cycle. Combining them causes a reaction that largely neutralizes both.
Before putting vinegar into a washing machine, consult the manufacturer’s instructions. Repeated exposure to acid may damage certain rubber components in some machines, and vinegar should never be mixed with chlorine bleach.
Baking soda can also be unsuitable for certain machines or fabrics when used incorrectly.
For many households, the safer first approach is simpler: use an appropriate detergent, avoid overloading, select the correct temperature, and add an extra rinse.
Skip the Fabric Softener for Towels
Fabric softener may make towels smell pleasant temporarily, but it can coat their absorbent fibers.
That coating can prevent towels from taking in water efficiently and may trap body oils and product residue. Over time, the towels can develop a stale smell more quickly.
Dryer sheets can create a similar coating.
If softness is important, shake towels firmly before drying, avoid overdrying them, and tumble them with wool dryer balls if your machine and towels permit. Keep in mind that anything added to the dryer should be used according to its safety instructions.
Dry Towels Immediately—and Completely
Even a perfectly washed towel can become musty again if it sits wet in the washing machine.
Move the load to the dryer or clothesline as soon as the cycle ends. Shake out each towel so it isn’t tightly twisted.
If using a dryer, clean the lint filter before or after every load and avoid packing the drum too tightly. Thick seams and folded edges can remain damp even when the surface feels dry, so check each towel before putting it away.
If line-drying, leave plenty of space between towels and choose an area with good airflow. Indoors, use ventilation to prevent excess moisture from collecting in the room.
Never fold or store a towel that is even slightly damp.
Your Washing Machine May Be the Hidden Source
If every load develops an unpleasant smell, the towels may not be the only problem.
Moisture, detergent, lint, and residue can collect in washing-machine seals, dispensers, filters, and drums. Front-loading machines can be especially prone to buildup around the rubber door gasket.
Clean the machine according to the manufacturer’s instructions. This may involve:
- Wiping the door and rubber seal
- Cleaning the detergent dispenser
- Checking and cleaning the accessible filter
- Running the recommended maintenance cycle
- Leaving the door and dispenser slightly open between loads, if safe
Never combine cleaning chemicals. In particular, chlorine bleach must not be mixed with vinegar, ammonia, or other household cleaners.
Daily Towel Habits Matter Too
The best wash routine cannot compensate for towels that remain crumpled and wet every day.
After bathing, spread the towel fully across a wide bar or drying rack. Hooks are convenient, but thick towels often remain damp where the fabric folds together.
Allow towels to dry before placing them in the hamper. Wash them regularly, with frequency adjusted for humidity, use, health needs, and how quickly they dry between showers.
Each family member should also have a clearly assigned towel to reduce confusion and unnecessary sharing.
When a Towel May Be Beyond Saving
Some old towels retain odors because years of product buildup and repeated dampness have affected the fibers.
If a towel still smells after proper washing, thorough rinsing, complete drying, and machine cleaning, it may be time to replace it. Worn towels can be cut into cleaning cloths or used for messy household jobs, provided they are clean and suitable.
The biggest lesson was that musty towels did not need stronger perfume. They needed less buildup, more rinsing, better airflow, and faster drying.
Once I stopped overcrowding the washer, measured the detergent, skipped the softener, and dried every towel completely, that stubborn smell finally disappeared—and stayed away.
