Life can be quite the surprise, can’t it? We’re never fully prepared for the hurdles life throws our way, yet it’s crucial to hold onto the hope that things can and will get better.
Chelsea Hough was eagerly awaiting the arrival of her new baby. Her pregnancy had been smooth sailing, and at 36 weeks, she welcomed a baby boy named Karson Jax Hough into the world.
At first glance, Karson seemed to be a perfectly healthy newborn. But shortly after, his heartbeat began to slow, eventually stopping altogether. Doctors attempted to jump-start his heart with skin-to-skin contact with his mom. It worked for a brief moment, but soon, Karson relied on a ventilator for his heart and lungs.
“The only way to describe what has happened is that this beautiful baby boy has suffered two very rare conditions that are completely unrelated to one another. One being unidentifiable as to a cause,” Karson’s grandmother, Lisa Hough, shared. Doctors believed Karson had suffered from a hemorrhage in his left temporal lobe, along with nonketotic hyperglycinemia (NKH)—a rare genetic disorder causing excessive glycine build-up in his body’s tissues and fluids.
The medical team assessed his condition and conveyed that his prospects for survival were minimal. Eventually, they recommended discontinuing life support for Karson.
After much contemplation, the family concluded that following the doctors’ advice was the correct course of action. At a prayerful family gathering, they were informed there were only about ten minutes with Karson before he would likely pass.
To everyone’s astonishment, as soon as the ventilator was turned off, little Karson began breathing independently. A true miracle indeed.
“Today, we witnessed a miracle!!” wrote Lisa Hough. “We were given 10 minutes after withdrawing intensive care and the ventilator and told he would not breathe on his own and to expect his heart to stop within those 10 minutes… Well, God and Karson had other plans!
“I’m not sure why I ever thought we were so undeserving of a miracle. I don’t know how much time we’ll have with him, but we have him now. And that’s what matters,” Lisa expressed.
Back at home, Karson began to flourish. His weight is stable, his heart rates are normal, and the glycine levels in his body have decreased significantly. Each day, he continues to overcome the odds.
We send heartfelt wishes to this precious child for a bright and healthy future.
