Like many people, I had always kept that familiar blue-and-yellow can in the garage. I used it occasionally when a hinge squeaked or a rusty bolt refused to move, but I assumed that was about it.

Then I discovered that WD-40 Multi-Use Product is designed to do more than quiet squeaks. It can penetrate stuck parts, displace moisture, loosen certain residues, lubricate moving metal components, and help protect metal against corrosion.

That makes it surprisingly helpful for several stubborn household jobs—provided it is used carefully and only on appropriate surfaces.

Here are some of the most practical uses I found.

1. Quieting a Squeaky Door Hinge

This is the classic use, but there is a reason people keep recommending it.

Place a cloth beneath the hinge to catch drips, then apply a small amount directly to the hinge pin or moving joint. Move the door back and forth several times to distribute the product, then wipe away everything that runs down the hinge.

The important part is using a small, controlled application. Spraying half the door only creates an oily mess and may stain nearby paint, wood, or flooring.

For hinges that squeak repeatedly, the pin may eventually need to be removed, cleaned, and lubricated more thoroughly.

2. Loosening Stubborn Nuts, Bolts, and Screws

Rust and corrosion can make a simple repair feel impossible.

A small amount of WD-40 applied around a stuck metal fastener may help penetrate the corroded area. Let it sit briefly before trying the correct tool again.

Avoid forcing the fastener immediately. Excessive pressure can strip the screw head or cause the tool to slip.

If you are working on an appliance, unplug it first. For plumbing, gas, structural, or electrical repairs, call a qualified professional when the job extends beyond a simple accessible fastener.

3. Removing Sticky Label Residue

Glass jars, metal containers, and some hard surfaces often retain a sticky patch after the label is removed.

Apply a little product to a cloth rather than spraying the entire object. Rub the residue gently, then wash the surface thoroughly with an appropriate cleaner.

Always test a hidden area first. WD-40 can affect certain plastics, finishes, adhesives, paints, and porous materials. Never use it on food-contact items without washing them completely afterward, and don’t assume it is suitable for every antique, painted, or delicate surface.

4. Helping a Metal Zipper Move Again

A stubborn metal zipper on a tool bag, outdoor cushion cover, or piece of luggage may need only a tiny amount of lubrication.

Spray the product onto a cotton swab or cloth, then apply it carefully to the metal teeth. Work the zipper slowly rather than pulling it forcefully.

Keep the product away from surrounding fabric because it may leave an oily mark. This trick is better suited to durable household or outdoor items than delicate clothing.

If the zipper is misaligned or has damaged teeth, lubrication will not repair it.

5. Removing Certain Crayon Marks

The manufacturer notes that WD-40 has been recommended for removing ordinary crayon marks from various surfaces. However, the surface itself makes a huge difference.

A washable painted wall may react differently from wallpaper, unfinished wood, or flat paint. Test an inconspicuous spot first, use the smallest possible amount, and apply it to a cloth rather than spraying widely.

After the mark loosens, clean the area with a mild product appropriate for the surface. Stop immediately if the finish changes color or becomes shiny.

6. Cleaning Scuff Marks From Some Hard Surfaces

Dark shoe marks on durable tile or certain finished floors can be frustrating.

A small amount applied to a cloth may help loosen the scuff. Rub gently, then clean the area thoroughly so no slippery residue remains.

For garden tools, clean off soil and plant material before applying anything. Keep treated tools away from children and pets, and store sharp items securely.

Cutting tools may also need proper sharpening and a lubricant designed for their particular mechanism.

8. Freeing Rusty Garden Shears

If pruning shears are difficult to open and close, debris or corrosion may be collecting around the pivot.

After removing visible dirt, apply a small amount to the metal joint and move the handles slowly. Wipe the blades carefully afterward, keeping your fingers away from the sharp edges.

WD-40 may restore movement, but it cannot fix a bent blade, broken spring, or loose locking mechanism. Damaged cutting tools should be repaired or replaced.

9. Loosening a Stuck Metal Latch

Outdoor gates, shed doors, toolboxes, and old cabinets often have metal latches that become stiff after exposure to moisture.

Apply a controlled amount to the moving joint, work the latch several times, and wipe off the excess.

If the latch belongs to an exterior security lock, consult the lock manufacturer before applying any product inside the keyway. Some locks require a specific dry lubricant, and an unsuitable product could eventually attract debris or interfere with the mechanism.

A very small amount around the point of contact may help the pieces slide apart. Allow it to penetrate, then twist gently rather than pulling suddenly.

Once separated, wash household items thoroughly. Never apply the product to cookware that cannot be properly cleaned afterward.

What WD-40 Should Never Be Used For

The internet is filled with questionable “miracle uses.” Some are ineffective, while others are dangerous.

WD-40 should never be applied to the body as a treatment for arthritis, sore joints, or any medical condition. The company explicitly rejects this myth and notes that the product contains petroleum distillates.

It should also be kept away from food, pet dishes, children’s toys that may enter the mouth, and anything intended for internal use.

Because the aerosol is extremely flammable, use it only with adequate ventilation and keep it away from flames, sparks, pilot lights, hot surfaces, and other ignition sources. Unplug electrical appliances and tools before working near them. Follow the directions and warnings on the actual container; the manufacturer’s current safety information also warns against breathing the mist or puncturing and burning the can.

Never spray it on brakes, tires, walking surfaces, or anything that depends on friction for safety.

A Small Can With Some Surprisingly Practical Uses

WD-40 isn’t a universal cleaner, and it won’t repair parts that are broken, badly corroded, or worn out. But when used carefully, it can solve quite a few small annoyances around the house.

The best approach is simple: read the label, test the surface, apply only a little, provide ventilation, and wipe away the excess.

That half-forgotten can in the garage may not replace your toolbox—but it could make several jobs inside it much easier.
