Danny DeVito: A Beloved Actor with a Remarkable Journey

A Journey of Success

Danny DeVito, the immensely popular actor with fans worldwide, has a fascinating life story. He has captured the hearts of multiple generations with his talent and charm. Making his movie debut in the 1970s, he has since enjoyed a remarkable career in both film and television. You may recognize him from his iconic role in the hit sitcom Taxi.

A Fateful Meeting

In 1971, Danny met Rhea Perlman while working on Broadway. Both DeVito and Perlman hail from the east coast. Danny was born in Neptune, New Jersey in 1944, while Rhea was born in Brooklyn, New York four years later. Little did they know, their paths would cross and their lives would intertwine in countless ways.

Overcoming Challenges

Growing up, Danny faced teasing due to his height. He candidly shared his experience, saying, “I was plagued by my height; it hindered me from slow-dancing with the girls I wanted because my face would be in a spot where I might be thought of as moving too fast.” Despite this adversity, DeVito’s determination never wavered.

Shared Dreams

As teenagers, both Danny DeVito and Rhea Perlman harbored dreams of pursuing careers in acting. Rhea, in particular, knew she wanted to leave Brooklyn and eventually moved to Manhattan to study drama at Hunter College. Meanwhile, Danny took a fortuitous detour down a unique path to success.

A Twist of Fate

Danny first attended makeup classes at the American Academy of Dramatic Arts in New York. However, destiny had other plans for him. The Academy’s teachers were so impressed with DeVito’s exceptional talent that they suggested he switch to acting classes. Taking their advice, he graduated from the American Academy in 1966, setting the stage for his future as an actor.

Pursuing Dreams in Hollywood

After his training, DeVito moved to Hollywood to try his luck in the film industry. Although his initial endeavors didn’t pan out as expected, he never lost sight of his ultimate goal. Sharing his experience, he reminisced, “I worked as a car parker and hung around the Sunset Strip with all the flower children. I had long hair, wore a raincoat and sneakers, and I fit right in. But I wanted to act.”

A Serendipitous Encounter

In 1970, fate brought DeVito and Perlman together once again. Rhea and a friend went to see a play, where Danny happened to be starring. Mesmerized by his performance as a demented stable boy who could only speak in monosyllables, Rhea found him irresistibly attractive. In her words, “He sang a song that didn’t make any sense at all. It was like a mating call. I knew I had to meet him if he wasn’t married. So we arranged a date.”

Love Blossoming

Rhea and Danny hit it off right away. Danny recalls, “She was vibrant, with a great sense of humor, and real warm.” Together, they embarked on a romantic journey that eventually led to their wedding in 1982. The following year, they welcomed their eldest daughter, Lucy Grace. In 1985, their second daughter, Grace Fan, was born, followed by their son Jake in 1987.

A Parenting Partnership

After 35 years of marriage, the couple surprised the world with news of their separation in 2017. Despite this, they remain committed to raising their children with love and respect. Although not officially divorced, they maintain a friendly relationship for the well-being of their children.

Following in Their Footsteps

All three of Danny DeVito and Rhea Perlman’s children have chosen paths in the entertainment industry, just like their famous parents. Lucy Chet DeVito graduated with a theater degree from Brown University and has appeared in minor roles on her father’s hit television show, It’s Always Sunny In Philadelphia. She continues to make a name for herself as an actress.

The Apple Doesn’t Fall Far from the Tree

Grace, their second-born daughter, also pursued a Hollywood career but prefers to work behind the camera. She has acted in notable projects such as the 2015 movie Amboy and the 2017 TV series Jeff & Some Aliens. Despite her career, Grace manages to maintain a low profile.

The Youngest Trailblazer

The youngest among Danny and Rhea’s children, Jake, has also ventured into the world of acting. He made his debut in the 2014 film The Better Angels and has worked behind the scenes on various movies and projects in roles such as sound, camera, and electrical departments.

A Family’s Resilience and Togetherness

Despite their decision to separate, Danny DeVito and Rhea Perlman’s family remains strong. Their shared love for their children shines through. They support and understand their children’s struggles in the industry, providing guidance and advice whenever needed. Their close bond is a testament to their enduring connection as a family.
