BOY SPENDS ALL HIS SAVINGS ON BOOTS FOR POOR CLASSMATE—SAME DAY, A TRUCK WITH A REWARD STOPS AT HIS HOUSE

It had been seven months since David started saving money to buy the pair of sneakers he had always wanted. His mom couldn’t afford to buy him these shoes, as she worked hard to provide for him and his two sisters. One day, his piggy bank was finally full, and he had enough to bring his dream shoes home. On the bus ride home from school, he couldn’t stop talking about it with his friend Guillermo. That’s when the bus suddenly jolted over a pothole, and one of Guillermo’s shoes slipped off onto the bus floor.

David was taken aback at the sight of the worn-out, blackened shoe. The soles were full of holes, the canvas was coming apart, and there wasn’t even a sign of a lace. That same day, David took Guillermo with him to the store. But instead of buying shoes for himself, he picked out a pair for Guillermo. It felt like the right decision, even though it meant giving up the shoes he had dreamed of—shoes that would have helped him play soccer better. Later, David returned home, filled with happiness, knowing his friend’s feet wouldn’t freeze in those old, tattered shoes.

Suddenly, his mom called out to him, “David! There’s someone at the door for you! He arrived with an entire truck, actually.”

David’s heart began to race. He hadn’t told anyone about what he had done at the store—besides his mom, who he knew would support him no matter what. He wondered who could be arriving with a truck. Slowly, David walked to the front door. When he opened it, he saw a tall man wearing a bright blue jacket and a big smile. Behind him, parked on the street, was a large delivery truck with a colorful logo on the side.

“Are you David?” the man asked, holding a clipboard in his hand.

David swallowed hard and nodded. “Yes, sir, that’s me,” he replied.

The man introduced himself as Mr. Lozano, a local businessman who owned a chain of shoe stores in town. He explained that he had heard a story from one of his employees. This employee was the cashier who helped David buy the boots for Guillermo. She had been moved by David’s kindness, so she mentioned it to her boss. Mr. Lozano was so touched that he decided to do something special in return.

David’s mom stood beside him with a worried but curious look on her face. Mr. Lozano smiled warmly at both of them. “I’m here because I believe good deeds deserve recognition,” he said. “Young man, you gave up your own dream to help a friend in need. That’s something we don’t see every day.”

David felt his cheeks grow warm. He looked at the ground and mumbled something about it not being a big deal. But Mr. Lozano shook his head. “It is a big deal,” he insisted. Then he waved at the driver of the truck, who stepped out and opened the back.

Inside the truck were all kinds of boxes and packages. Some were big, some were small, and all of them had the same colorful logo from Mr. Lozano’s shoe stores. David’s eyes grew wide as the driver began unloading them onto the sidewalk.

“These are shoes and boots for your whole family,” Mr. Lozano explained. “I brought different sizes so your mom and sisters can pick out what they like. And, of course, there’s a pair just for you—the ones you’ve been saving for.”

David’s mouth dropped open. He stared at the man, unable to speak. He had spent seven long months saving up every coin he could find. He had dreamt of the sneakers, imagining how great they would feel on his feet while he played soccer with his friends. And yet, in a single moment, he had decided Guillermo’s need was greater than his own.

“How did you know I wanted those sneakers?” David finally managed to ask.

Mr. Lozano patted him on the shoulder. “My cashier remembered which ones you asked for,” he said. “She told me you came in with your friend but ended up buying shoes for him instead. She felt sad watching you leave without your dream pair.”

David glanced at his mom. She had tears in her eyes as she watched the boxes pile up on the front porch. She gently placed her hand on David’s back, as if to say she was proud of him.

Just then, two more people stepped down from the truck—both were holding large bags of groceries. They carried the bags into the house, placing them on the kitchen table. “We wanted to help in any way we could,” Mr. Lozano said. “I know your mom works hard to support you. This is our way of saying thank you for raising such a thoughtful kid.”

David couldn’t believe what was happening. Not only did he now have the sneakers he had longed for, but his sisters, his mom, and even Guillermo were all going to receive new footwear. There was enough for everyone. The truck seemed to have an endless supply of boxes.

After everything was unloaded, Mr. Lozano invited David and his mom to sign a simple document to confirm the delivery. David’s mom hesitated, feeling that such generosity was too much. She tried to refuse some of the items, saying that a few boxes would be plenty, but Mr. Lozano insisted they keep them.

“You can share with anyone else who needs shoes,” he said with a friendly grin. “I’m sure Guillermo isn’t the only kid in your neighborhood who has worn-out shoes. If you meet another child who needs a pair, give them one of these boxes. That’s how we keep the kindness going.”

David’s heart felt like it might burst. He realized that by making one generous choice, a chain of goodness had begun. First, the cashier spread the word. Then Mr. Lozano joined in to help. Now, David had the chance to share even more with others. The joy of giving would continue.

Finally, Mr. Lozano and his team climbed back into the truck. As the engine started, David ran to Mr. Lozano’s window. “Thank you, sir,” he said with a shaky voice. “Thank you for everything.”

Mr. Lozano waved. “No, thank you, David. You reminded me that sometimes the smallest acts of kindness can spark something big. Enjoy your new sneakers.”

David stood on the sidewalk, watching as the truck drove away. He felt the warm afternoon sun on his face. His mom put her arm around his shoulder and pulled him close. He could see tears in her eyes, but she was smiling. David’s two sisters poked their heads out of the front door, wondering what all the excitement was about. Behind them, dozens of boxes sat waiting to be opened.

He gently told them about the man who came with the truck and how there were shoes and groceries for everyone. The little girls squealed with joy, running to see what was inside the boxes. David stepped into the house, filled with a sense of gratitude. He thought about Guillermo, who must be thrilled with his new boots at that very moment. Then he pictured all the other kids who might receive shoes next.

As he sat down on the couch, David felt happy and peaceful. He realized that giving up something he really wanted had led to something even greater than he could have imagined. His one act of kindness had brought many blessings back to his home and would now help others in the neighborhood.

So here’s a question for you: if you had saved up for a long time to buy something you really wanted, would you give it up to help a friend in need, not knowing that you might be rewarded later?
