Betty White, 99, passed away last December 31, 2021. She was a beloved actress for seven decades. The American actress was best known for her comedic work on numerous television sitcoms, most notably ‘The Mary Tyler Moore Show’ and ‘The Golden Girls.’
According to her assistant, before Betty passed away, the love of her life was on her mind and lips.
Actress Vicki Lawrence, 72, shared with Page Six that she was told by actress and friend Carol Burnett about White’s final moments. She said, “I texted Carol and said, ‘This just sucks. I hate this. It’s just horrible to see the people you love so much go away.
’ Carol wrote back and said, ‘I know, I know. I spoke to Betty’s assistant, who was with her when she passed, and she said the very last word out of her mouth was ‘Allen. ’”
Lawrence said that what Burnett shared was a light in the darkness after hearing of Betty’s passing. She said, “How sweet is that? I said, ‘That is so sweet. God, I hope that’s true. For all of us, I really hope it’s true, a lovely thought.’”
Allen Ludden married Betty White in 1963. He passed away of stomach cancer back in 1981 at the age of 63. Ludden, one of TV’s most famous game show hosts was Betty’s third marriage.
Talking about Ludden to CNN’s Piers Morgan back in 2012, Betty said, “I just wasn’t about to take another chance. Then I thought, ‘Am I going to live the rest of my life without this man?’ Thank goodness we got married when we did.”
In a separate 2011 interview with CNN’s Anderson Cooper, Betty shared why she never married again after Ludden passed away. She said, “I had the love of my life. If you’ve had the best, who needs the rest?”
Vicki Lawrence further recalled how Betty made every production a joy. She said, “Well, you didn’t really work with her — you just had a good time. Carol called it ‘playing in the sandbox,’ and I think that’s exactly what it was.
Betty was just the perfect playmate. And I have to say this, she was incredibly professional. I don’t remember her ever not being prepared or ever messing up her lines.”
She also noted that there was a time that Betty arrived an hour late to the set, but for a typical ‘Betty White’ reason. She said, “This was before cellphones, and everybody was beside themselves because Betty was never late.
And she walks in, in a dither, and says, ‘I’m so sorry, but I was driving here and these two golden retrievers come running out into the intersection and they’re obviously lost.
I had to pull over and get them. ’”
Betty White is known to be an animal lover. Lawrence said that Betty got the dogs back home “because that’s what Betty would do.”
Further, Lawrence said that Betty White was an entertainment industry rarity. She said, “Show business can be so disappointing when you meet people, but Betty was such a lovely lady, and I loved hearing her talk about early, early Hollywood.”
Passing away at 99, Betty White has proven why she is one of the most-loved comedian and actress of all time. She will surely be missed.
