Ah’lyric, a young girl from Florida, was playing with her brothers outside their apartment complex on July 6 when a white Range Rover rolled up, and an unidentified guy approached them.
When Ah’lyric’s siblings realized something was wrong, they returned inside, leaving her behind.
The guy grabbed Ah’lyric’s arm and tried to draw her towards him in seconds. Ah’lyric instinctively resisted the man as he grabbed her and attempted to carry her back to his car.
However, Ah’lyric’s quick thinking saved her life, as she told NBC South Florida: “I bit him.” Her understanding of self-defense enabled her to avoid a potentially terrifying situation for herself and her family. Her bite stunned the man, who was probably not expecting it, and he dropped Ah’lyric, smacking her before fleeing.
Fortunately, the incident was recorded on CCTV, providing substantial evidence to local police. The man’s vehicle, including its license plate, was visible in the tape, which led to the identification and subsequent arrest of Leonardo Venegas of North Miami 48 hours later on July 8. The 32-year-old is accused of kidnapping and child abuse that did not result in bodily damage.
Venegas has now claimed that he was in the region to look at properties for sale, even though no properties were on the market in the area, according to police reports. He also recalled leaving when he heard a scream but didn’t mention Ah’lyric.
Miami Police Captain Freddie Cruz told NBC that the incident was “unusual,” but he nonetheless advised parents to keep a tight eye on their children while playing outside.
Captain Cruz also indicated that officials were investigating whether Venegas attempted to kidnap additional youngsters in the region, and he encouraged local neighbors to report anything strange to police.
Ah’lyric was quick-thinking and able to escape; it must have been a huge relief for her family to get their daughter back safe and sound.
