Sandra Bullock Talks About Her Journey In Raising Black Children As A White Mother

Fans know Sandra Bullock as one of the most talented actresses of all time. She is not only an award-winning actress and producer, but one role in life that is most important for her is being a mother.

Sandra Bullock has two children and both were adopted. Her son, Louis, is 11 years old, and her daughter, Laila, is 9 years old. Both Louis and Laila are Black and we all know that Bullock has very pale skin. But of course, that does not bother her, just like other white mothers who are raising black children.

It should not matter, right? No matter what the color of the skin or the race of a child, nothing should matter but the love that you have for them.

But sometimes, the 57-year-old could not avoid having this question in the back of her mind. In an interview with TODAY’s Hoda Kotb, she said, “That was on my mind when they were very, very, very young — is that, will they love me less because I don’t represent their culture?”

Talking about her priorities in life, Bullock said, “It’s my kids. Everything is about them being OK, being in school, having what they need, their moments. I need to be there for every single moment that they have. It’s harder for me to leave them than I think it is for them when I leave. I don’t leave that much, and I don’t work that much anymore either.

… So my priorities are my kids, my kids, my kids. My family. My family. That’s it. ”

Still, she could not help but worry for their safety. She said that her bigger fear is for the safety of her children in this world where their race alone can make them targets of hatred and violence. She said that this is something that she thinks about “24/7.”

She said, “As a parent of a Black child you have to. You know, as a white woman, I didn’t have to think about that until the day I fell in love like I did. You realize that there is a whole universe that you have to educate yourself to.” Bullock adds, “Once you see it, you can’t un-see it.”

But even though she thinks that she’s being a great mother to them and she makes them her only priority, she can’t help but feel that probably, it would be easier if they all had the same skin tone. Even though this does not personally matter to her, but she feels that it would be easier in the way that others view her family.

She opened up about this topic when she appeared on a new episode of ‘Red Table Talk. ’

For sure you too know some parents who are raising children with different skin tones or from different cultures. It can be through adoption or they have a mixed-race family which resulted in children whose skin tone looks more like one parents’ than the others’.

This kind of family setup has become more common these days. Still, some people find it hard to accept the reality that race, culture, religious beliefs, and the color of the skin should not matter.Hopefully, one day, the world won’t view it as any different. We are praying that in the near future, the world will see these families as one unit because of their love for each other, and not for their skin tone.
