Eddie Murphy’s Kind Gesture: Helping Redd Foxx in His Darkest Days

It’s not uncommon for celebrities to face financial troubles, and comedian Redd Foxx was no exception. Despite reaching Hollywood stardom, he found himself penniless in his sixties. However, one person who stood by his side was fellow comedian and actor, Eddie Murphy.

Redd Foxx became a household name for his role as Fred G. Sanford on the show “Sanford and Son” and even had his own show called “The Redd Foxx Comedy Hour.” But as he grew older, he faced financial difficulties that left him feeling isolated and alone, with no one to turn to except Eddie Murphy.

Redd Foxx’s financial troubles began when he owed the IRS a staggering $755,166.21 in back taxes. The IRS retaliated by raiding his Las Vegas home, seizing his possessions to recoup the money. Even though Redd made a significant amount of money from his performances at the Hacienda Hotel on the Vegas Strip, it was not enough to satisfy the tax authorities.

Redd Foxx believed that the IRS had a particular interest in the money he earned from the film “Harlem Nights,” an amount totaling $500,000. He described the tax he had to pay as ridiculous, comparing it to “Hitlerism” and criticizing the American tax system. When the IRS raided his home, they even tried to take his dog-house, although it was too large to transport.

Throughout this difficult time, Redd Foxx felt disappointed that his Hollywood friends didn’t come to his aid. He expressed his heartbreak, saying, “I haven’t heard from anyone. That’s remarkable. I just can’t believe it. No one at all has called.” He even reached out to Eddie Murphy, but received no response.

However, it was the support from unexpected sources that gave Redd Foxx hope. Neighbors and even school children rallied around him, providing provisions and even collecting money to help him with his financial woes. This outpouring of love touched Redd’s heart, and he felt humbled by the generosity of others.

While Redd Foxx experienced a tragic end to his life, suffering a heart attack while rehearsing for “The Royal Family,” Eddie Murphy made sure his friend’s legacy was honored. He personally paid for Redd’s funeral and headstone, along with supporting him during his most challenging times. Eddie even cast Redd in the sitcom “The Royal Family” after a five-year absence from television.

Reflecting on his own life, Eddie Murphy’s story differs greatly from that of Redd Foxx’s. With a large and loving family, Murphy cherishes every moment spent with his children and grandchildren. As a proud father of ten children, he appreciates the joy and laughter they bring to his life. Being a dad and a grandfather is Eddie’s favorite role, and he values the normalcy and grounded nature of his family members.

In a world where fame and fortune can bring instability, Eddie Murphy finds solace in the love and support of his family. His journey has taught him the importance of being there for others, just as he was for Redd Foxx in his darkest days. This is a testament to true friendship, loyalty, and the power of compassion even in the face of adversity.
