A Discovery with Hidden Potential

During a visit to Julie’s hometown, the couple stumbled upon an abandoned Dutch colonial house. Despite its worn-out exterior, they saw beyond the surface and recognized its hidden charm. They knew this house had the potential to be something truly special.

Renovating an old house

Saving a Piece of History

There was one catch – the house had to be relocated within a year, or it would face demolition. The Lincoln County Hospital & Healthcare Foundation offered the house for free to anyone willing to move it. Julie and Eddie saw this as an opportunity to not only save a historic house but also create their perfect family home.

A Chance of a Lifetime

Word spread like wildfire on social media about the “free house,” attracting attention from the local community. Eddie and Julie decided to take a chance and apply. They met all the criteria set by the committee, ensuring that the house would remain in Lincoln and become their family’s abode. Fortunately, their bid was chosen, and they became the proud owners of their dream home without spending a dime.

Restoring Old Treasures

Undertaking the task of renovating an old house is no small feat. However, for Julie and Eddie, it was an exciting challenge. They documented their entire journey on social media, sharing their progress and the surprising discoveries they made along the way. From replacing the roof to sealing open areas, they breathed new life into the house.

A Journey of Dedication and Community

During the renovation process, the couple discovered intriguing artifacts, like children’s handprints from 1973. Despite facing challenges like cockroach-infested insulation, their dedication never wavered. They were determined to preserve the house’s rich history and transform it into a place of love and joy.

Relocating a Dream

The most significant task was yet to come – moving the house itself. The expertise of Unruh House Moving came into play as they carefully relocated the home to a new plot of land just two miles away. Julie and Eddie watched in awe as their dream home was lifted onto a truck and transported to its new location.

A Community Effort

Currently residing in a house owned by Julie’s parents, the Flores family continues to work on completing the renovations. With an investment of approximately $95,000, they aim to finish the project by Thanksgiving. They have turned their dream home into a community project, collaborating with local businesses to make it a shared achievement.

A Tale of Transformation

Julie and Eddie’s journey embodies the incredible power of dedication and community spirit. They have transformed an abandoned house into a cherished family home. Their story serves as an inspiration to all, reminding us of the beauty and fulfillment that can be found in turning a neglected house into a place filled with warmth and love.
