The incredible story of a man who was born without half a face
Joseph Williams believes that after spending decades feeling “worthless,” he was finally saved by love after being bullied his entire life because he was born without a jaw.
He now wants to emphasize to those who are struggling that they too deserve better from life.
The 41-year-old guy from Chicago was born with otofacial syndrome, a rare congenital condition brought on by a defective gene that prevented him from using his mouth to communicate or eat. Instead, he uses his eating tube and sign language to communicate.
According to him in a New York Post article, “Dating was also difficult for me since I had such poor self-esteem and felt useless, but when I started believing in myself and realized I deserved more, I ended up finding my wife.”
Williams, a welder, had long believed he would live a lonely existence until he met Vania, a 39-year-old soul mate, in 2019.
As he grew up, everyone tried to protect him from the outside world by telling him he “couldn’t do this and that, but I didn’t want to let my condition hold me back and I didn’t want to be constrained.”
Williams developed his communication skills while using a special tube in his stomach to eat, as well as sign language, gestures, his phone, and note-taking.

It “came as a surprise” to his birth mother that he was born without a jaw. When he was just a few days old, his many maxillofacial procedures were sent to Chicago.
The man stated, “Growing up was difficult, and being born this way has given me many challenges, but I have tried not to let it affect me.
Williams has vowed to live life to the fullest with Vania despite his physical limitations, and his goals include sharing his love of music and drumming.
