Sinéad O’Connor’s body has been returned to her family; autopsy results could take ‘weeks’.

The news of Sinéad O’Connor’s terrible death on Wednesday, July 26 has shocked the entertainment industry.

“It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our beloved Sinéad,” her family told The Irish Times in a statement. “Her family and friends are devastated and have requested privacy during this very difficult time.”

O’Connor’s music earned critical praise and global popularity, but she also struggled with mental health concerns and was embroiled in various scandals as a result of her outspoken political and social beliefs.

Her first album, The Lion and the Cobra, was released in 1987 when she was only 20 years old. The record was an international success, earning O’Connor a Grammy nomination. It was named one of the best albums of the 1980s by Slant Magazine and Pitchfork, with Slant calling it “one of the most electrifying debuts in rock history” and Pitchfork praising the album’s “themes of patriotism, sexuality, Catholicism, and social oppression set the stage for a career marked by a resolute sense of independence.”

I Do Not Want What I Haven’t Got, O’Connor’s follow-up album, was her biggest triumph, and included her rendition of Prince’s “Nothing Compares 2 U,” her most famous and highest-charting track. The Billboard Music Awards dubbed it the “#1 World Single” of 1990, and it routinely appears on lists of the greatest songs of all time.

On Wednesday, British police discovered the singer “unresponsive” at her London home, and she was pronounced dead at the spot after they were summoned. According to a statement, an autopsy is currently being performed, and the results may take “several weeks” to be available, postponing the determination of the official cause of death.

However, authorities have stated that her death is not being investigated as “suspicious.”

According to the Daily Mirror, shortly after O’Connor’s unfortunate death was disclosed, the London Inner South Coroner’s Court said that they will decide whether to initiate an inquest after the autopsy results were available and following applications from her relatives.

O’Connor’s body has just been released to her family, who are obviously still grieving her untimely death, now that the autopsy has been done.

Not long before her death, O’Connor provoked outrage by tweeting about her son, who committed himself in January 2022 after being missing in Ireland.

The famous singer took to social media to express her grief and anguish following the death of her son. She recalled feeling “lost” and living as an “undead night creature” without him, highlighting their deep bond.

“I’ve been living as an undead night creature ever since…” On Twitter, O’Connor described her son as “the love of my life, the lamp of my soul.” “We were one soul split in two. He was the only person who ever truly loved me. Without him, I’m lost in the bardo.”

In addition to her son’s death, she has openly voiced suicidal thoughts on numerous occasions in recent years, notably during a period when she went missing in Chicago in 2016.

Following her death, fellow musicians and celebrities paid tribute to the renowned singer on social media, honoring her for both her music and her advocacy work.

During this terrible time, our thoughts and prayers are with her family, friends, and fans.
