Princess Diana’s friend describes the last call she made before passing away.

One of Princess Diana’s closest friends is thinking back on their last phone chat, which took place the evening before her terrible passing in Paris in 1997.

For the upcoming Diana documentary, which will screen Thursday night in the U.K., Richard Kay, a veteran royal reporter and friend of the princess, reflects on the phone call that would end up being her last.

I spoke to her that night,” he says, but Kay wouldn’t understand the importance of that contact until the 36-year-old had passed away in a car accident as a result of a fast-moving paparazzi pursuit. The final call she made, according to the police, was to me.

According to Kay, the mother of Prince William and Prince Harry, who were then 15 and 12, was “in quite a happy place.” She wanted to return and see her boys the most, though.

Diana was excited to start a new chapter in her life as well. Kay explains, “She was desperate to try and do something different and explore a different kind of aristocracy.

Tragically, Diana would never understand that even in death, her legacy, her love for her children, and her compassion would transform the monarchy, sending shockwaves throughout society.

In the weeks leading up to July 1, which would have been “The People’s Princess’s” 60th birthday, a lot of friends and family members are stepping forward to honor her. Kay is just one of them.

For the first time since their grandfather Prince Philip’s burial in May, her boys will also be meeting to honor their mother on her birthday by unveiling a statue in her honor on the grounds of Kensington Palace.

It will be a difficult day, but it will be in honor of a sister, mother, etc. who was dearly loved and lost, according to her brother Charles, Earl of Spencer.

Indeed, Diana has received many tributes recently, from Kate Middleton, Duchess of Cambridge, William’s wife, to the middle name of Harry and Meghan Markle’s first child, who was born on June 4 and a subtly nodded to Diana on June 11 through her jewelry.

Princess Charlotte, the 6-year-old cousin of William and Kate, and baby Lili have the same middle name. Additionally, Diana would have been extremely moved by her two sons’ homage, according to Diana’s friend and personal astrologer.

Debbie Frank recently told PEOPLE, “Diana would have been very touched by both of her granddaughters carrying her name.” It’s a lovely act of love from both her boys, and she would have been overjoyed.
