Mary Lou Retton’s Health Struggles: A Brave Battle for Life

Mary Lou Retton, a name that many of us hold dear, is not only a gymnastics legend but also an inspiration to so many. Her outstanding performance at the 1984 Summer Olympics in Los Angeles, where she earned perfect 10s and secured a gold medal, made history and cemented her place in American sporting glory. She was even honored as Sports Illustrated’s Sportswoman of the Year and featured on the iconic Wheaties box. Now, let’s rally behind her as she faces her greatest challenge yet.

Recently, Retton’s daughter McKenna Kelley took to her Instagram Story to share a heart-wrenching update. The remarkable gymnast is currently in the intensive care unit (ICU), fighting a rare and serious form of pneumonia. This illness has left her unable to breathe on her own, and she’s been under the care of dedicated medical professionals for over a week now. It’s a tough road ahead, but together, we can support her through this difficult time.

Out of respect for Retton’s privacy, Kelley hasn’t shared all the details. However, she did mention that her mother does not have health insurance, and the cost of treatment is adding up quickly. In light of this financial burden, Kelley has set up a fund and humbly appeals to anyone who can lend a helping hand. She asks for two simple things: prayers for her mother’s recovery and any financial contribution towards the hospital bills. Every bit of support counts, no matter how small.

Retton may have retired from gymnastics in 1986, but she never faded away from the public eye. She made guest appearances on popular shows like Glee, Baywatch, and even graced the dance floor on season 27 of Dancing With the Stars. This incredible woman has always shown resilience and determination, and now we have the opportunity to show our support for her.

Despite this challenging chapter in her life, Retton remains a proud and loving mother of four daughters. She continues to be a role model for countless individuals and was rightfully inducted into the International Gymnastics Hall of Fame.

We understand that this news is still unfolding, and as more information becomes available, we will provide updates. Let’s come together as a community and send positive thoughts, well wishes, and support to Mary Lou Retton as she fights this battle with all her strength.
