Luke Combs Discusses His OCD Diagnosis

Luke Combs may have revealed his love songs and heartaches in songs like “Forever After All” and “She Got the Best of Me,” but he is now opening up about something more personal. Combs discussed his struggles with anxiety and obsessive-compulsive disorder, or OCD, in an interview with Apple Music’s Kelleigh Bannen.

“I did experience quite significant anxiety at periods in my life,” Combs said to Bannen. “My OCD [obsessive-compulsive disorder] was pretty bad. I mean, crippling is the word I’d use.”

While he was able to continue recording music and delivering chart-topping songs such as “Hurricane” and “Beer Never Broke My Heart,” Combs has struggled with anxiety and intrusive thoughts for years.

What helped him was learning to “live with ambiguity” regarding matters over which he had no control. He also found solace in becoming a father and being able to stay at home during the pandemic rather than touring incessantly.

Bringing his son Tex into the world helped Combs keep things in perspective. “I look at things in ways I never would’ve been able to look at things before,” he told Bannen.

“There are things that used to matter regarding your concern. You just don’t give a damn about it anymore. Almost immediately. You’re just like, ‘I don’t care about it. ‘I don’t give a damn.'”
