Shannen Doherty believes that it is crucial to be “as honest as possible” when she pursues a cancer treatment. The actress battled breast cancer from March 2015 to April 2017, then she disclosed that it has come back in February 2020.
“I’m going to reveal that I’m stage IV in a few days or a week. So, my cancer returned. And that’s why I’m here,” she said at the time on Good Morning America. “I don’t believe I’ve thought it through. In a lot of respects, it’s a difficult pill to swallow.
Doherty said her most recent diagnosis came roughly four months before the sad passing of her co-star Luke Perry from Beverly Hills, 90210. It’s really strange that I was diagnosed after someone who, you know, seemed to be healthy passed away, the woman remarked.
“It was extremely startling, like. And [rebooting BH90210] was the least I could do to respect him. … Along with Luke, I participated in 90210 without actually telling anyone since I reasoned that others with stage IV cancer may see that it was possible for them to work as well.
Like, you know, the moment we receive that diagnosis, our life doesn’t end. There is still some living to be done.
The Riverdale guest star talked openly about her darkest moments. She acknowledged, “I definitely have days where I wonder, ‘Why me?’” Then I think, “Well, why not me? ” One more? Who else deserves this besides me? All of us do not.
The Tennessee native gave an explanation for her decision to tell her fans about her health difficulties in September 2021.
During a virtual panel for her film List of a Lifetime, which centers on a woman who creates a bucket list after learning she has breast cancer, she said, “I feel like I have a responsibility in my more public life, which I separate from my acting life… to talk about cancer and perhaps educate people more and let people know that people with stage IV are very much alive and very active.”
The Webby Award winner denied having one when asked if she had created one after learning of her own condition.
“I’m very much like, ‘There’s no bucket list because I’m going to be the longest-living person with cancer,’” she told the panel. “If I had to pick only one, I’d say living. I currently just have that item on my list.
