At the age of 18, I was lucky enough to inherit a two-story apartment building from my dad.

Seeing its potential, I decided to rent out the ground floor while I lived on the second floor.

Growing up in a small town, I never imagined that my life would take such an interesting turn. At the age of 18, my father gifted me a two-story apartment building. Excited by the opportunity, I decided to rent out the ground floor while I lived on the second floor. Little did I know that this decision would lead to an unexpected twist in my love life.

Living an hour away from the city, the location of the apartment building turned out to be a great source of passive income. I charged a reasonable $500 per month for rent, which was lower than what other modern apartments in the area were going for. It was a win-win situation for both me and the tenants.

Three months into dating, I made the decision to invite my boyfriend to move in with me. He was facing some housing issues, and I thought this would be the perfect solution. However, I hadn’t mentioned to him that I was the landlord of the building. As months passed, he continued to live with me, oblivious to the fact that I owned the place he called home.

One day, while talking to one of the tenants about a broken freezer, my boyfriend overheard our conversation. Shocked, he realized that I was the landlord and had been keeping this information from him. He exploded in anger, accusing me of being deceitful and demanding 50% of the rent as if he was entitled to it.

His reaction took me aback. I couldn’t understand why he felt so entitled to my income and why he saw my actions as deceitful. After taking some time to reflect, I made the difficult decision to break up with him. It became clear that his behavior was unreasonable and that we had no future together.

To ensure my safety and security during the breakup, I asked my dad to be present when I talked to my ex-boyfriend. This proved to be a wise decision, as my ex-boyfriend continued to demand an apology and question why I didn’t want to share my income with him. It was a challenging and emotional conversation, but I stood my ground.

I challenged his hypocrisy by asking why he would want money from someone he believed to be a terrible landlord. In an attempt to find a compromise, I even suggested donating the 50% to charity for housing. However, he shot down the idea and continued to accuse me of being selfish.

As tensions escalated, my ex-boyfriend threatened to expose me to our friends. It was a difficult situation to navigate, but with the support of my dad and the Reddit community, I found the strength to move forward. The Reddit community offered their support and even suggested changing my locks for added safety, regardless of whether my ex-boyfriend returned the keys.

Looking back on this experience, I learned a valuable lesson about the importance of trust and transparency in a relationship. It’s crucial to be open and honest about significant aspects of our lives, even if we don’t initially think they’re a big deal. Trust is the foundation for any successful relationship, and without it, there can be no future.
