An old Roman mosaic floor was uncovered beneath an Italian farm.
A Roman mosaic was discovered beneath a farm in Verona, Italy. Architects found the treasure in the hills above the village of Negrar di Valpolicella in northern Italy. About a century after the remnants of an old villa were discovered, the discovery was made.
Archaeologists believe the elaborate flooring was once part of a larger structure. It was discovered “after decades of futile attempts.”
Experts are currently determining the safest way to excavate the stunning mosaic floor, which will likely date back to the third century AD.
In Verona, Italy, a Roman mosaic was uncovered beneath a field. “Scholars discovered part of the flooring and foundations of the Roman Villa almost a century ago,” it continues.
“After that, the Superintendence will collaborate with the landowners and the town to determine the best way to make this archaeological treasure accessible, open, and visible beneath our feet.”

Excavation on the site was suspended in 1922, but it was restarted last summer by Verona’s Superintendent of Archaeology, Fine Arts, and Landscape team.
Soon later, an intriguing discovery was made. A tweet from archaeologist Myko Clelland, who spotted the discovery online, quickly went viral.
