A Surprising Appearance

The golden-crowned flying fox bat, with its broad wings and lean, hairy body, may seem intimidating at first glance. Its appearance, akin to a winged vampire, can create quite a spectacle. However, don’t let the looks fool you. These fruit-eating megabats, unique to the Philippines, are harmless and do not show any signs of aggression towards humans.

An Endangered Species

Sadly, these creatures are facing numerous challenges. Their habitat is rapidly shrinking due to deforestation and encroachment by humans. Moreover, illegal hunting for sport or food has worsened their endangered status. The golden-crowned flying fox bat, also known as Acerodon jubatus, is exclusive to the Philippine jungles. It often lives in large colonies, with some groups boasting up to 10,000 members. These bats prefer a nocturnal lifestyle and feast on figs, roots, fruits, and vegetables in the darkness. Their heads are even adorned with a fluffy golden crown!

Guardians of the Forest

Contrary to popular belief, these bats do not rely on echolocation but instead use sight and scent to navigate through the air.
