Photographer Mick Rock to be honored in NYC a year after his death

Legendary rock photographer Mick Rock — who snapped everyone from David Bowie to Miley Cyrus — will be honored at two events in New York a year after his death.

Fotografiska will host a book release and life celebration event Monday, on what would’ve been Rock’s 74th birthday. We’re told guests at the event will be able to preview Rock’s final book, “Shot by Rock: A Celebration of the Life of Mick Rock.”

Additionally, “there will be stories told and an original short film of outtakes from Mick Rock’s acclaimed film ‘SHOT! The Psycho Spiritual Mantra Of Rock,’” the museum says on its site.

We hear that designer John Varvatos, director John Cameron Mitchell, The Feelies singer Glenn Mercer, The Bongos’ Richard Barone and DJ duo The Muses are among the storytellers and performers for the evening.

An organizer for the event described it as “the first of a do-not-miss remembrance of Mick Rock’s legacy.”

Rock’s posthumous coffee table book features photos he took of Dave Grohl, Pharrell Williams, and Cyrus, among others. Cyrus was the last musician he shot when he photographed her “Plastic Hearts” album cover before his death.

In the book, he describes “Miss Miley” as having “the complete duality like David… She’s really a girl, but she’s a complete tomboy too, which is really fabulous. David would’ve loved her,” he wrote.

“Walking Dead” star Norman Reedus wrote the foreword saying of Rock, “he shines bright with freedom and authenticity, just like his pictures.”

An insider told us the foreword is in the present tense because, “Reedus penned it before Mick’s death and [publishers and the estate] wanted to keep the book true to Mick’s vision.”

Rock died on Nov. 18, 2021, and “the estate has never disclosed his cause of death because they want to continue to honor his iconic images,” our insider said.

We’re told the famed Morrison Hotel Gallery will next honor him with a photo installation at the Georgia Room for a private, invite-only event at a later date.
