Marilyn Monroe Statue to Be Relocated After Controversy
In response to concerns raised by local critics, Palm Springs has decided to move its iconic Marilyn Monroe statue to a different location. The towering 26-foot statue, known as “Forever Marilyn,” has been a beloved fixture in the downtown area for three years. However, the statue’s placement and provocative pose have sparked controversy, with some labeling it as “sexist” and inappropriate for children.
The statue depicts the famous scene from the 1955 film “The Seven Year Itch,” where Monroe’s white dress billows over a subway grate. While some have found this depiction of Monroe to be an enduring symbol of her allure, others argue that it reduces her to a sexualized image, sending the wrong message to young viewers.
After careful consideration, Palm Springs Mayor Jeffrey Bernstein announced, “The City Council is pleased to have found a satisfactory solution to this divisive issue within our community.” While the new location within the park has not been disclosed, it is clear that the statue’s prominence will be significantly diminished.
This is not the first time the statue has faced controversy. It was initially installed in 2014 but was later removed due to similar concerns. It was only recently returned in 2021, reigniting the debate. Former Palm Springs Art Museum executive director, Louis Grachos, argued that the statue’s position, which exposed Monroe’s backside and underwear, exemplified misogyny. Others, such as Elizabeth Armstrong, another former museum director, criticized the statue as “a monument to misogyny,” perpetuating harmful attitudes towards women.
Local protests against the statue have been vocal and visible, with activists expressing their disapproval through signs and a Change.org petition calling for the statue’s removal or relocation to a less central location. Despite the backlash, the statue also has its defenders. Tourism industry leaders in the area have embraced the statue as a major draw for visitors, highlighting its success in attracting tourists and generating interest.
The decision to relocate the Marilyn Monroe statue reflects larger debates about art, public spaces, and societal values in today’s politically charged climate. It underscores the complex interplay between cultural symbols and community sensibilities.
